XXI

If we wanted the world,
The weight of it would crush us
In our selfless nature.
As we would stumble,
Our feet, knees, hips and heads
would just fall.

The ashes of our bones
Would marry the sons and daughters
of the dust
that borne us.

The ears that could not hear
Would succumb to the silence
Of a barren, doomed earth
That would breed naught but
bitter muscle and bone.

But the ears that wouldn't listen
Couldn't comprehend
The love that destroyed the earth.
